Today, wine director, owner and son-of-Bern David Laxer has a list that spans a massive 6,800 selections, including a dizzying 200-plus wines available by the glass and backed by an inventory of half a million bottles. Over the years, he bought up the surrounding stores to expand the restaurant to its current eight-room dining area, and developed a private organic farm in North Tampa to supply much of the steak house’s produce. The restaurant’s founder, the late Bern Laxer, opened Bern's in 1956 in what was originally a bar in a strip mall. Since opening in the 1950s, Bern's has grown from one to eight dining rooms.Ī Grand Award winner since 1981, Bern’s Steak House is a Tampa institution.
